What is Musculoskeletal Therapy?
Musculoskeletal Therapy (MST), is a branch of manual medicine that focuses on the treatment and management of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Musculoskeletal therapy involves extensive physical assessment, that includes postural and movement screening to determine the particular and underlying cause of pain and associated dysfunction. This is an integrated, therapeutic approach to the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction.
Why see a Musculoskeletal Therapist?
Generally speaking, you could see a musculoskeletal therapist with most aches and pains. This may include things such as:
- Back, neck and shoulder pain
- Sporting injuries
- Postural strains
- Pregnancy related aches and pains
- Ergonomic and rehabilitation advice
What to Expect:
Your therapist will first take a thorough case history establishing the purpose of your visit and to understand the history of the presenting injury. An extensive physical assessment involving postural analyses and functional movement screening are then performed to assess structures causing pain and movement dysfunctions.
Based on the initial assessment findings a treatment plan is developed and discussed with the patient. Treatment methods involve various ‘hands on techniques’ including dry-needling, mobilising of joints, stretching, advanced massage techniques, cupping therapy, and corrective exercises addressing mobility and/or stability dysfunctions. Treatment goals are to decrease pain and restore movement quality.
Through the use of various ‘hands on’ treatment techniques and corrective exercises we restore physical wellbeing so you may get back to leading an active lifestyle…free of pain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my private health?
Most private health funds will cover a portion of your musculoskeletal therapy, should you have ‘extras’ or ancillary benefits. We have HICAPS facilities available for on the spot claims, so you need only pay the gap.
How long is a Musculoskeletal therapy consultation?
Your initial MST consultation will take a period of 1 hour. All subsequent consultations are for 45minutes duration.
We understand that life is busy, and situations sometimes arise. As with all services at take2health, we ask that you please give a minimum of 24hours notice to cancel or reschedule your MST appointment. Less than 24 hours notice will result in a cancellation fee being charged.
In order to get the most out of your treatment time, we recommend you arrive 5minutes early. As we often have appointments booked back to back, unfortunately if you are late, it will mean you will have a reduced treatment time, for the remaining allocated treatment time.
What do I need to bring?
If you have any recent tests or x-rays it would be helpful for you to bring copies of these for your therapist.
